"The Evolution of
My Spirits
"
The innate spiritual nature of my works makes it difficult to describe the process of their development. "Grandmother," like all of my pieces, evolved over time. Sometimes the process takes weeks, sometimes months. An image comes to mind, and as I reach out to fashion it, a basic form begins to take shape. That shape then suggests the draping of the leather; the flow and layering being the most important.
Contrasts emerge, and the background becomes an important consideration; it enhances or highlights, never competes. The adornments of feathers and beads reflect the major theme, be it a warrior, a maiden or a symbol. Frames with depth not only protect the image but also project the reality of the materials.
In the case of "The Bear," the main figure is only suggestive, balanced on a layer of leather. The warrior legend is evoked with the shield, and the beads and feather speak of battles, manhood, sacrifice, and victory. The blue background adds warmth and a third dimension.
"Red Fawn" is an example of a stand-along Spirit. It is as if the Spirit is waiting in the shadows, slowly coming into focus as the layers of leather are added. The inspiration for these Spirits is intangible. I think they simply find their voice through me.
